Jarrell is a city of Williamson County in the U.S. state of Texas in the United States. In 2010, the population was 987 people.

Geography

The distance to the north-eastern city of Temple is around 40 kilometers. 60 km southwest lies Austin. The Interstate 35 highway runs right through Jarrell.

History

The city is named after the settlers O. D. Jarrell named, founded the city in 1909. After a railway line ran through the place where the population grew to over 500 people and it developed farms where cotton and wheat was grown and where cattle breeding. During the Great Depression and after the adjustment of the rail link, the population dropped to fewer than 200 people. With the establishment of new business areas, the population grew slowly but steadily again to just under 1000 people.

Jarrell tornado

On 27 May 1997 Jarrell was struck by a major disaster, when a tornado level F5., The Jarrell tornado devastated large parts of the city and 27 people lost their lives. Today, of the former destruction hardly anything to notice.
