Järve is a village (Estonian küla ) in the rural community Kohtla ( Kohtla vald ). It is located in Ida -Viru county (East Wierland ) in northeastern Estonia.

Description and History

The village has 657 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2010). It lies just to the northeast of the city Kohtla -Järve on the overland route between Tallinn, Estonia and Russia's second largest city of St. Petersburg.

The place was first mentioned in records in 1241 Liber Census Daniae. He was wearing the name Jeruius.

1916 took place the first test mining of oil shale in the village.

Castle Järve

The estate of Järve is documented since 1497. It belonged to the Lode family and bore the name Türpsal. The construction of the castle vassals short time later, in 1508, began. She served fortified residential purposes.

The estate at that time belonged to the Paykull family, who remained until 1815 owners. Last owner before the expropriation in the course of the Estonian land reform in 1919 was the aristocratic Baltic German family Dehn.

For the construction of the castle of local limestone was used. Of the former three storeys, the lower two are still preserved. The walls are 1.75 to 2 meters thick. During the Second World War the building fires have greatly affected.

Very near the castle was formerly the country home " Friedenthal ". He lived and worked from 1795 to 1797, the playwright August von Kotzebue ( 1761-1819 ).
