Career
Nekounam played in his youth for the Iranian club Saipa Tehran. His breakthrough came with his move to Iranian top club Pas Tehran, the Iranian master he was in season 2003/ 04. He left Pas Tehran after seven successful years and signed a contract with Al Wahda in the UAE.
In January 2006, he then moved on to league rivals Al- Sharjah. Nekounams good and consistent performances in the professional league of the Emirates made him the object of desire. Some well-known European football clubs including the 1st FC Kaiserslautern, Tottenham Hotspur, and CA Osasuna wanted to sign him. The contract was awarded by the Spanish first division club Osasuna. Already in the first season of 2006 /07 at CA Osasuna Nekounam could be put to the proof. He was there quickly to key players and crowd favorite. Although Nekounam in the 2007/ 08 season due to injury turned out for a long time and came to only two brief appearances, Osasuna offered him a contract extension until 2011, which he accepted. After the season 2011/2012 Nekounam joined the Iranian club Esteghlal Tehran top. He signed a two year contract there.

Nekounam was first appointed on 31 May 2000 in the levy of the Iranian national team.
His biggest success to date is the third place in the Asian Cup in 2004, where he scored two goals. He participated in the 2006 World Cup in Germany.
