Javier Echevarría Rodríguez

Javier Echevarría Rodríguez ( born June 14, 1932 in Madrid, Spain), Prelate of Opus Dei headquarters in Rome.

Life

Echevarría is a doctor of civil law and canon law. He belongs since 1948 to the Opus Dei and was ordained a priest on August 7, 1955. He was secretary of the Catholic Church revered as sacred Josemaria Escriva from 1953 until his death in 1975. Since 1966 Echevarría is also a member of the General Council of Opus Dei.

As Alvaro del Portillo succeeded 1975 Escrivá at the top of Opus Dei, Echevarría was Secretary General. With the establishment of Opus Dei as a personal prelature 1982 Echevarría General of the Prelature. Since 1981 he has been consultant to the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, and since 1995, the Congregation for the Clergy. Pope John Paul II appointed Echevarría on 20 April 1994 after his election to the Prelate of Opus Dei, and consecrated him on 6 January 1995 in St. Peter as bishop; Co-consecrators were the Curia Archbishops Giovanni Battista Re and Jorge María Mejía. Echevarría is Titular Bishop of Cilibia. His apostolic succession is is in the so-called Rebiba - line until 1541. Quality office he is Grand Chancellor of the Pontifical University of the Holy Cross, the University of Navarra and Universidad de Piura ( Peru).
