Jay Thomas Evans

Jay Thomas Evans ( born January 21, 1931 in Tulsa, † March 8, 2008 in Norman (Oklahoma) ) was an American wrestler. He won a silver medal in free style at lightweight at the 1952 Olympics in Helsinki.

Career

Tommy Evans attended a high school in his hometown of Tulsa. There he also began with the rings. He started it in two styles, the Greco-Roman and free style, although the Greco-Roman style, played a minor role, with one exception. In addition to the rings at the high school he went to the wrestling club of the YMCA Tulsa at the start. At a size of 1.67 meters, he first started out in the featherweight and lightweight in 1952. After his high school he studied at the University of Oklahoma and was at this university after his time as an active wrestler for over twenty years coach and finally head coach of the local wrestling clubs ( " Sooners ").

As a wrestler he made in 1951 for the first time sustained attention to himself when he took 2nd place in the featherweight at the NCAA Championships. In 1952 and 1954 he was the NCAA champion in the lightweight. He was also in the years 1954, 1956 and 1957 AAU champion. The NCAA Championships are the American students Championships AAU Championships are the championships of the general Amateur Sports Association of the United States. Since at that time were almost all Ringer students, the title of NCAA champions had a höreren value than that of the AAU Champions.

In 1952 Tommy Evans also qualified for participation in the Olympic Games in Helsinki. He started there in free style at lightweight. He came to victories over Mohammed Badr, Egypt, Jack Ward, Belgium, Osvaldo Blasi, Argentina, John Cools, Belgium and Risto Talosela, Finland. Then he met the multiple world champion and Olympic gold Second 1948 featherweight Olle Anderberg from Sweden, against whom he lost scarce and controversial 2-1 judge votes. In the final battle against Jahanbakht Tofigh from Iran, he then secured with a win the Olympic silver medal.

1956 Tommy Evans also qualified for participation in the Olympic Games in Melbourne. He started there in free style again at lightweight. He came to wins over J. Taylor, UK, Shigeru Kasahara, Japan and Mario Tovar from Mexico. In his fourth fight he lost somewhat surprising against the Hungarian Gyula Toth on points, which he reached five faulty points and was eliminated. He got away with it only on the 5th Place. He started then also in the Greco-Roman style in lightweight, but had than in this style inexperienced wrestler against Kyosti Lehtonen from Finland, the future Olympic champion, and against Dimitar Stoyanow from Bulgaria no chance. He retired after these two defeats and came up with four other wrestlers on the 7th Place.

Besides his start in these two Olympic Games Tommy Evans graduated no further launches in international championships.
