Jean Bachelet

Jean René Bachelet ( born October 8, 1894 in Azans, Jura, † February 26, 1977 in Cannes) was a French cinematographer.

Life

Bachelet had worked from 1912 to 1914 in Russia as a newsreel cameraman for the film company Gaumont. When war broke out, he returned to France, where he began in 1923 to photograph as chief cameraman films. From the following year until the outbreak of World War II Bachelet used a total of 15 year-long, irregular collaboration with Jean Renoir, for whom he did the camera work in ten films. In addition to a number of side works, he also photographed Renoir masterly productions such as Nana and Rules of the Game.

In addition, Bachelet was a regular contributor to the movies Sacha Guitry, for whose productions he was also behind the camera since 1945. Mid-50s to Bachelet moved by the film largely back and settled in southern France.
