Life

At fourteen Willaumez came to the Navy and to the ship "Bien -Aimé ", which Louis Antoine de Bougainville led.

Under command of Admiral François Joseph Paul de Grasse Willaumez fought in the American War of Independence. In the Battle of Les Saintes (April 12, 1782) he was able to excel, but during a naval battle off Cape Henry (northeast of Virginia Beach ) a few weeks later, he was wounded and fell into British captivity. 1791 Willaumez concluded on behalf of the National Assembly to Captain Joseph Bruny d' Entrecasteaux to search for the lost geographer Jean -François de La Pérouse. After Entrecasteaux end of July 1793 had died before the hermit Islands ( Papua New Guinea), Willaumez broke off the expedition and returned to France.

Together with Louis Thomas Villaret de Joyeuse, he brought in 1802 General Charles Leclerc d' Ostin and his invading army to Saint -Domingue ( Hispaniola ), where they should quash the uprising led by Toussaint Louverture.

1819 put Willaumez down all his offices and retired into private life; the occasion of his official farewell he was promoted to Vice Admiral. During the July Monarchy, he was one of the advisers of Ferdinand Philippe d' Orléans, duc de Chartres.
