Jean-François Clervoy

Jean -François André Clervoy ( born November 19, 1958 in Longeville- lès -Metz, France ) is a French astronaut.

Biography

Clervoy studied in France at a military college mathematics ( preparatory classes Classes Préparatoires ) and was then at the prestigious École Polytechnique ( X1978 ) allowed. In 1983, he joined the National School of Aerospace ( SUPAERO ) from Toulouse. After that he went as an engineer for the French space agency CNES and worked on systems for attitude control of satellites. In addition, he served in the Air Force, where he trained as a test pilot.

Astronauts activity

1985 Clervoy was selected by the CNES as astronaut candidate. In the Russian Star City in 1991, he took part in the Astronaut Training. In 1992 he was admitted to the European Astronaut Corps of the ESA.

He is currently working in the program for the Automated Transfer Vehicle and has been president of Novespace.

STS -66

On November 3, 1994 Clervoy started as a mission specialist aboard the space shuttle Atlantis on its first flight into space. The ATLAS - 3 mission continued the series of Spacelab flights to explore the solar radiation and the Earth's climate. Clervoy sat with the shuttle robotic arm from the CRISTA- SPAS satellite and caught him after eight days of free flight again.

STS -84

With the Space Shuttle Atlantis Clervoy flew on 15 May 1997 as payload commander for the Mir space station. After docking several tons were brought to equipment and experiments in the Russian space station. In addition, a crew change was made. Astronaut Jerry Linenger was replaced after four months and returned with the shuttle to Earth. His place was taken by Mike Foale. After 9 days, the mission STS -84 was on 24 May to the end.

STS -103

On 20 December 1999 aboard the space shuttle Discovery Clervoy to an 8-day servicing mission for the Hubble Space Telescope. During this mission, new instruments and system extensions have been installed. Clervoy operated the robotic arm of the space shuttle to the telescope to capture and maneuver around his astronaut colleagues in the three eight-hour spacewalks in space.

Private

Jean -François Clervoy and his wife have two children. In September 2009, his book was published Histoire ( s ) d' espace.
