Jean Jérôme Hamer

Jean Jérôme Hamer Cardinal OP ( born June 1, 1916 in Brussels, † December 2, 1996 in Rome ) was a Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church.

Life

Jean Jérôme Hamer joined the Congregation of the Dominican and completed a General Studies in La Sarte and lions. During the Second World War he was a soldier and spent some time in captivity. After further study, he received his doctorate at the University of Fribourg as a doctor of theology. In 1941 he received the Sacrament of Holy Orders. From 1944 to 1962 he taught at the University of Fribourg, but mainly in Rome and at the Faculty of Dominicans Saulchoir in Étiolles in Paris. From 1962 he served as Dean of Studies for the students of his order. From 1962 to 1965 he participated as an expert for the unity of Christians in the Second Vatican Council. In 1966, he provided management tasks to the Secretariat for Christian Unity.

On 14 June 1973 he was appointed Titular Archbishop of Lorium, received on 29 June of the same year by Pope Paul VI. episcopal ordination and was appointed Secretary of the Congregation. 1984 he was appointed by Pope John Paul II Pro- Prefect of the Congregation for Religious Communities. 1985 Jean Jérôme Hamer was taken as a cardinal deacon with the title Diakonia San Saba in the College of Cardinals. He was raised while maintaining its titular church of Cardinal Priest pro hac vice in 1996.
