Jerzy Nowosielski

Jerzy Nowosielski [ nɔvɔɕ ɛlski ʲ ] ( born January 7, 1923 in Krakow, † February 21, 2011 ) was a Polish painter.

Life

As a child Nowosielski was already known to the Ukrainian icon painting in the then Polish Lviv and Eastern Galicia, which throughout his artistic career has left traces in the form and content of his paintings. In a family of Greek- Catholic born, he comes later to the Orthodox faith.

1940 Nowosielski students in Kraków School of Applied Arts. During the war he learned the art of icon painting and helped with the frescoes in the Ukrainian Church of Bolechow.

He began in 1945 to study painting at the Cracow Academy of Fine Arts under Professor Eugeniusz marshmallow, this he finished only in 1961. A year later he took over the management of a chair at the Academy. In 1976 he was appointed professor, remained in the teaching profession until 1993. Nowosielski Back then painted pictures with female figures, gymnasts, swimmers, also still life. The influence of icon painting was visible in areal configuration of the image area with clear outlines. Some pictures seem almost abstract, others go towards hyper- realism.

Already in the 1950s he worked on the frescoes in many Roman Catholic and Greek Catholic churches. Then he rejected the secular themes and devoted himself almost exclusively to the icon-painting. He also studied Orthodox theology. His frescoes and icons can be seen in various places of worship. On the edge of its activities, Nowosielski also dealt with the stage set. In Bialy Bór he created a small Greek Catholic Church, the Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, be integral plant, designed by the overall design to the smallest detail yourself.

Jerzy Nowosielski was awarded an honorary doctorate from the Jagiellonian University of Cracow.

Nowosielski was Poland's representative at the Venice Biennale in 1956 and at the São Paulo Biennial in 1959 in Brazil. In 1988 he was awarded the Jan- Cybis price. Works by Nowosielski are located in the National Museum in Wroclaw, Gdansk, Kielce, Krakow, Poznan, Szczecin and Warsaw, as well as at the Art Museum in Łódź, the regional museums in Olsztyn, Białystok, Bydgoszcz, Czestochowa, Radom and Zielona Góra, the Upper Silesian Museum, Bytom, the Silesian Museum Katowice and other local museums.
