Geography

Jeßnitz is located in a floodplain on the lower portion of the trough. East of the city begins the Dubin Heath. Nearest towns are the directly adjacent Wolfen, about 20 km north of Dessau, Halle ( Saale) about 30 km southeast of Leipzig and about 35 km south.

History

Origins

In a Magdeburg deed dated October 17, 1259, the name was first mentioned Jeßnitz reliable. According to tradition, the place should have been listed but documented already in 1156. The historic city center to the west of the trough probably arose from a fishing village. In 1401 Jeßnitz is mentioned as a city. The name of the city was in 1265 Jezzant, 1285 de Jezaniz, 1297 and 1408 Jessenitz Geßnitz.
