Jim Blinn

James Frederick Blinn, Jim Blinn frequently cited ( * 1949 ) is an American computer scientist who pioneered in computer graphics.

Blinn 1970 received a bachelor's degree in physics and communication science at the University of Michigan, where he also did a master's degree in engineering. In 1978 he received his doctorate at the University of Utah in computer science. He was then at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, where he created animations for the Voyager probes, worked at Caltech (where he at this time early courses in computer graphics at the College of Design in Pasadena was ) and since 1995 has been at Microsoft Research.

Blinn bump mapping developed (1978) and was involved in the development of the reflection mapping ( Blinn lighting model, Blinn Phong Shading 1977).

In other circles, he was (for which he received the NASA Exceptional Service Medal ) and known for the documentary series Cosmos by Carl Sagan in PBS and by the early computer simulations for the Voyager missions. At Caltech, he worked on animated projects for physics and mathematics pedagogy ( The Mechanical Universe, Project Mathematics ).

From his column in IEEE Computer Graphics and Applications Journal (for which he received the IEEE Outstanding Contribution Award in 1989 ) was also a book series (Jim Blinn 's Corner ).

In 1991 he was MacArthur Fellow. In 1995 he received an honorary doctorate in Fine Arts from Parsons School of Design. In 1983 he received the SIGGRAPH Computer Graphics Achievement Award, and the 1999 Steven Anson Coons Award.
