Joachim Radkau

Joachim Radkau ( born October 4, 1943 in Oberlübbe in Minden ) is a German historian.

Life

The son of a Lutheran pastor from 1963 to 1968 studied history in Münster, Berlin and Hamburg, among others, Fritz Fischer, who impressed him greatly. 1970 Radkau received his doctorate at Fischer on the role of German-speaking emigrants from 1933 to 1945 in the context of the then U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt. From 1971 he taught at the Pedagogical University in Bielefeld.

From 1972 to 1974 Radkau wrote with George WF Hall garden, this overview factory German industry and politics of Bismarck to the present day. He took over in the representation of the period from 1933 to about 1968. He conducted research on the history of the German forest and the (after Radkau alleged ) wood shortage in the 18th and 19th centuries, the history of nature protection ( including any of its role in the German National Socialism ), on the relationship between nervousness and history of technology in Wilhelmine Empire. In this context, he also began with biographical studies of Thomas Mann and Max Weber.

A wider public Radkau became known when he published a history of the environment in 2000. Followed in 2005 by a highly acclaimed biography of Max Weber. For his life's work he received the 2012 Environmental Media Award.
