Joan Capdevila Méndez ( born February 3, 1978 in Tarrega, Lleida Province ) is a Spanish football player. The left-back is the Spanish side Espanyol under contract.

Association

Capdevila played at the beginning of his professional playing career with the team of Espanyol. For the first team, he debuted on Matchday 8 of the 1998/99 season in a 2-2 draw against Athletic Bilbao. Then he was no longer an integral part of the starting eleven and played in a total of 29 league games this season, 27 of them from the beginning.

For the season 1999 /00 Capdevila moved to Atlético Madrid. Even with Atlético, the man was placed on the left wing, but increased with the team at the end of the season in the Segunda División.

He then moved to Deportivo La Coruna, where he initially struggled with Enrique Romero for a place in the starting XI. Through his good performances he rose in his second season on the undisputed master force and won with Depor 2002 Spanish Cup. After Depor more and more became a middle-class club in the following years, he moved to the 2007/08 season for Villarreal.

With Villarreal he achieved an excellent second place, with the team was directly qualified for the UEFA Champions League in the Spanish League 2007 /08. Capdevila completed 36 league games as last season, but was two times more successful than scorer.

In the 2009/10 season he missed only one league game, the other 37 he played from beginning to end. In the game against Getafe CF on Matchday 13 of the season he scored two goals for a 3-2 victory to his team. At the end of the season Villarreal were missing two points on Getafe in order to secure the last possible European Cup starting place.

For the 2011/12 season Capdevila moved to Benfica, where he signed a two-year contract.

On 27 July 2012, the change to the Spanish side Espanyol was announced. Capdevila signed for one season with the Catalans.

National

In 2000 he took part with the Spanish Olympic team at the Summer Olympics in Sydney in 2000. He moved with his team in the final against Cameroon in. Ultimately, the Spanish players had to be content with the silver medal after losing the penalty shootout.

His debut in the Spanish National Team was Capdevila on 16 October 2002 in a 0-0 draw against Paraguay. Capdevila rose after the 2006 World Cup on first-team regular, scoring in November 2007 when qualifying match for EURO 2008 against Sweden 's first goal for the national team.

In May 2008 he was appointed Luis Aragonés in the squad for Euro 2008, where he became European Champion as a regular player.
