Joan Martí i Alanis

Joan Martí Alanís ( born November 29, 1928 in El Milà in the comarca of Alt Camp, Catalonia, Spain, † 11 October 2009 in Barcelona) was Bishop of Urgell and the same time Kofürst of Andorra.

Life

Joan Martí Alanís received on 17 June 1951, the ordination to the priesthood in the Archdiocese of Tarragona. He studied philosophy and Catholic theology in addition, French and English as well as art and classical literature.

On November 25, 1970 Pope Paul VI appointed him. Bishop of Urgell. On January 31, 1971 he donated Luigi Dadaglio, Apostolic Nuncio to Spain and later a cardinal, a bishop; Co-consecrators were the Archbishop of Toledo and later Cardinal, Marcelo González Martín, and the Archbishop of Tarragona, José Pont y Gol. He was awarded in 2001 by Pope John Paul II 's personal title of archbishop.

In his role as Kofürst of Andorra, he was much involved in the establishment of a modern constitutional state in Andorra. He had in the Spanish Episcopal Conference (CEE), the chair of the Episcopal Commission for Migration ( 1984-1987) and the Episcopal Commission for Social Media ( 1987-1993 ) holds. He was also from 1978 to 1984 member of the Executive Committee and later a member of the Episcopal Commission for the Missions. Between 1989 and 1999 he was a member of the Pontifical Council for Social Communications. He was awarded the Grand Cross of the Order de Isabel la Católica in 1989.

His resignation was accepted by Pope John Paul II in 2003.
