Joanna Fowler

Joanna Sigfred Fowler ( born August 9, 1942) is an American nuclear chemist at Brookhaven National Laboratory, Upton, New York and Professor of Psychiatry at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine and of Chemistry and Biomedical Engineering at Stony Brook University, both in New York City.

Life

Fowler earned 1964 at the University of South Florida in Tampa a bachelor's degree in chemistry and 1967 at the University of Colorado a Ph.D. before they went as a postdoc in chemistry in 1968 at the University of East Anglia in Norwich. Since 1969 she is at the Brookhaven National Laboratory in Upton, New York, initially as a research assistant, most recently a senior function (Senior Chemist ). Since 2006 she is also a professor of psychiatry at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City. She also has been a professor of chemistry and biomedical engineering at Stony Brook University - also in New York City - held.

Work

Fowler has pioneered the development and application of positron-emitting tracers for nuclear medicine image of the brain in positron emission tomography. In 1976 she was involved in the development of 18F- fluorodeoxyglucose. By Fowlers translational applications in neuroscience in understanding the brain function of the people could be radically improved. Fowler studied particularly changes in brain function during aging and in various disorders such as drug addiction or attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder ( ADHD).
