Joaquim Agostinho

Joaquim Agostinho ( born April 7, 1943 in Brejenjas, A dos Cunhados, Torres Vedras; † 10 MAY 1984 Lisbon ) was a Portuguese cyclist.

Cycling career

In February 1968, he began his career at Sporting Lisbon. In April of the same year he participated in a regional competition and won it. In August 1968, he took part for the first time at the Tour of Portugal. He was number two and won the team classification. Subsequently, he was nominated for the World Championship road race in Imola and achieved 16th place, the best result was a Portuguese reached by then.

Discovered by Jean de Gribaldy, Joaquim Agostinho won five times in succession, the Portuguese Road Championship ( 1969-1973 ), won three times in the Tour of Portugal ( 1970-1972 ) and took 13 times participated in the Tour de France. In the years 1978 and 1979, he finished in third place, respectively. In 1972 he took part in the Tour de Suisse and finished fifth.

1972 left Agostinho Sporting Lisbon and went to France to Frimatic. In 1973 he drove for Bic and returned in 1975 to Sporting Lisbon. In 1978 he moved to Velda - Flandria Lano - 1980 from there to Puch Campagnolo, where he had his best year probably. In 1981 he moved to Sem -France Loire.

Doping

During his career several times doping offenses were detected him. At the Tour de Portugal 1969 he received after a positive test, a time penalty of 15 seconds and slipped from 2nd to 7th place overall from. At the Tour de France in 1972, he was again tested positive and received a time penalty of 10 minutes. The third time he fell in the Tour de France in 1977, after a positive test in the 18th stage (which he won ), he received ten minute penalty, a fine of 1,000 Swiss francs and was one months locked on probation.

Fatal Accident

Joaquim Agostinho 1984 returned to Sporting Lisbon. On April 30 of that year he was attacked on the fifth stage of the Tour of Algarve tenth of a dog, fell and pulled to serious head injuries. Despite everything, he climbed back on his bike, finished the stage and was only ten hours later operated in Lisbon. Because of these injuries Agostinho died on 10 May 1984 in Lisbon's Hospital CUF.

Since 1978, a cycling race stages is aligned with the Grande Prémio Internacional de Torres Vedras, which counts since 2005 to the UCI Europe Tour and Agostinho dedicated. 2013, the city acquired an office building in which after two years as a museum to be built by Agostinho to the families of Agostinho and those of his teammates will contribute memorabilia. It was also inaugurated a new public bicycle rental system in May 2013 by the participants of the International Cycling History Conference, whose bicycles were called Agostinhas. In addition, in Torres Vedras a red wine is produced, bearing the name of Terras de Agostinho.
