Jody Powell

Joseph " Jody " Lester Powell ( born September 30, 1943 in Cordele, Crisp County, Georgia; † 14 September 2009 in Cambridge, Maryland) was an American political scientist and spokesman for the White House under President Jimmy Carter.

Powell grew up in Georgia and joined the U.S. Air Force Academy, but was expelled from there. He studied at Georgia State University and Emory University, where he earned a master's in political science. Since 1968 he worked for Jimmy Carter, first as a driver and consultant, after his election as Governor of Georgia as a press officer.

In Carter's presidential campaign, Powell was part of the Georgia Mafia, a close circle of confidants from Georgia with career prospects. After Carter was elected U.S. president, Powell was 1977-1981 Spokesman of the White House. After retiring from office Powell worked as a consultant and founded his own company that cares about public relations. He also worked as a spokesperson for television documentaries, among other things, he commented on the award-winning PBS production " The American Civil War ".
