Joe Johnson ( born July 29, 1952 in Bradford, West Yorkshire, England) was 1979-2004 a professional English snooker player.

His first major success was the finals at the IBSF World Amateur Championship in 1978. A year later he became a professional snooker on the main tour. In 1983 he reached the final of the Professional Players Tournament, which he, however, against compatriot Tony Knowles lost 8:9.

In 1986, he was a complete surprise as number 16 of the snooker world rankings, world champion with a 18:12 final victory over Steve Davis, the former leader of the world rankings.

In the following season 1986/87 he was, thanks to his world title, number 8 in the world. In the normal tournaments of the season he had no finals, but in the World Cup, the end of the season, he made it to the finals again. Again he met Steve Davis, defeated but this time with 14:18. In the world rankings for the 1987/88 season he was thus to rank 5, the highest rank of his career. This season, he was the Scottish Masters win a tournament that although belonged to the main tour, on which, however, there were no ranking points.

As a result, he could always win rare successes and fell in 1991 out of the top 16 in the world. That year he also played the last time at the World Cup. After the 2003/ 04 season, he finished his career as a snooker player. He is now a commentator for the station Euro Sport.
