Tony Knowles (snooker player)

Anthony Knowles ( born April 13, 1955 in Bolton, Greater Manchester ) is an English snooker player.

Life

Knowles began with snooker at the age of nine years in the gentlemen's club, which was directed by his father. 1972 and 1974 won the Tony Knowles UK Junior Championship. He began studying as a graphic designer, he dropped out to be around 1979 professional snooker player.

In his first year as a professional Knowles won a single game. A first success was to qualify for the World Cup 1981. During the season 1981/82 he reached both the UK Championship and the World Cup quarter-finals. He defeated in the first round of the World Cup defending champion Steve Davis with 10:1. Tony Knowles pulled thereupon for the first time into the top 16 in the world rankings.

In the 1982/83 season Knowles won a newly introduced ranking tournament with the International Open. At the World Cup he failed in the semifinals with 15:16 to Cliff Thorburn. 1983/84 he won the Professional Players Tournament his second ranking title and climbed the 2-position in the world rankings behind Steve Davis.

Two more times, in 1985 and 1986, Knowles made ​​it in the World Cup semi-finals. He stayed until 1990 in the top 16 in 1997, he lost his place on the Main Tour Snooker.
