Joel Joffe, Baron Joffe

Joel Goodman Joffe, Baron Joffe of Liddington ( born May 12, 1932 in Johannesburg), CBE, is a South African politician of the British Labour Party and human rights lawyer. He was one of the defenders of Nelson Mandela in the Rivonia Trial.

Life

Joffe studied at the University of Witwatersrand, where he made in 1955 a Bachelor of Commerce and Laws. From 1958 to 1965 he worked as an advocate for human rights. During this time he was one of the defenders of Nelson Mandela in the Rivonia Trial. His passport was confiscated, but in 1965 he received an exit permit and went to Britain. There he worked for various insurance companies, including as Deputy Chairman. In addition, Joffe committed volunteer at various organizations since 1980 when Oxfam, where he was elected in 2001 to the Chairman .. In 2000 he was appointed as Baron for Life Peer House of Lords. He is actively involved in euthanasia and supports the CIDA City Campus.
