Joel T. Headley

Joel Tyler Headley ( born December 30, 1814 Walton, Delaware County, New York, † December 30, 1897 in Newburgh, New York) was an American writer and politician.

Headley studied at the Presbyterian Seminary in Auburn ( New York) theology. Upon successful completion, he got a job as a preacher in Stockbridge (Massachusetts ). In the years 1842-1843 he undertook a study trip to and through Europe and settled on his return to Newburgh.

After it became the publication of his travel experiences in 1846 under the titles Letters from Italy and The Alps and the Rhine a great literary as well as financial success, Headley resigned from all his offices, and lived from then on as a writer. In 1855 Headley, who was a member of the American Party was, as a deputy of the New York State Assembly; 1856 to 1857 he served as Secretary of State of New York.
