Johann August Georg Edmund Mojsisovics von Mojsvar

Johann August Edmund Mojsisovics Edler von Mojsvár ( born October 18, 1839 in Vienna, † October 2, 1907 in Mallnitz (Carinthia ) ) was an Austrian paleontologist and geologist.

Edmund Mojsisovics of Mojsvár counted during his period of study in 1862 of the founding members of the Austrian Alpine Club and 1873 of the main initiators of the Association of the German and the Austrian Alpine Club.

Since 1865, he worked at the k.k. Imperial Geological Institute, the vice director from 1892 until his retirement in 1900. From Mojsvár published fundamental work on the stratigraphy and ammonite faunas of the Alpine Triassic, especially the Hallstatt limestones.

Life

Mojsisovics comes from a family with Hungarian ancestors. The titles of nobility acquired his father as chief physician in Vienna, who was honored for his services ( introduction of iodine as a remedy and the invention Aquilibrialmethode for healing of bone fractures ) of Emperor Franz Joseph I..

After Mojsisovics 1858 his Viennese school ended, he began in the same year at the University law school ( 1858-1862 ). During this time he went for geological and geographical studies in other studies of his predilection. With his fellow student Paul Grohmann and Guido Freiherr von Sommaruga he decided, inspired by common mountain walks, establishing the Austrian Alpine Club (1862 ). This was the first foundation of its kind on the European mainland.

At the University of Graz took place on 22 July 1864, the degree of Dr. jur. The geological interest was so strong that Mojsisovics on 18 February 1865 as a volunteer his work kk in the geological Reichsanstalt began. The volunteer work was probably of considerable quality, so that was entrusted to him in the summer of 1867 at the geological recordings of Upper Hungary (today Slovakia ) and Galician Carpathians with the duties of a section geologists.

Further studies, such as investigations of alpine salt deposits, to broaden the field of carbon Häring and Triassic fossil deposits in the Bakony in Veszprém, followed. After he rejected appeals to the Geological Survey of India in Calcutta and to the young royal Hungarian Geological Institute, he was appointed on 13 December 1870 in Vienna as chief geologist and granted the title of a mountain Council and from 1879 to the upper Bergrath. Since 1892, Mojsisovics rose to vice director of the kk geological Reichsanstalt on.

The main scientific work extended to the study of the Eastern Alps. The work begun in 1878 geologists International Congresses Mojsisovics accompanied with an important influence. At his suggestion, the institution decided in 1881 in Bologna the publication of a Geological Map of Europe. There, he represented in the editorial board officially Austria - Hungary.

By order of the Austrian government of Bosnia - Herzegovina was examined for mineral raw materials. This work was in charge transfer Mojsisovics and Emil Tietze and Alexander Bittner in the summer of 1879. The geological exploration of Bosnia led Mojsisovics in the northern parts of the country, around Sarajevo, Travnik, Gornji Vakuf, Jajce, Banja Luka, Sanski Most and Bihać. In the investigations of Bosnia - Hercegovina Karl Paul, Franz Hertich and Gjuro Pilar were still involved. The work provided extensive evidence on the wealth of mineral resources in the policies adopted by the Turkish empire areas.

To crown his career, you can view the organization of the Austrian earthquake observation. Mojsisovics began in 1897 and governed the processing of incoming Detailed reports of seismic events. Thus, he created the basis of the Austrian Observatory and the publication of the results of observation.

In November 1900 Mojsisovics ended after 35 years of service his work in kk Imperial Geological Institute. The last time was overshadowed by a dispute with A. Bittner, who was detrimental to his health condition. He died in 1907 in a proliferating cancer in the mouth and throat.

Trivia

Mojsisovics honor the Mojsisovicsspitze ( 2903 m) is named in the rear Seebachtal.
