Johann Franz Buddeus

Johann Franz Buddeus (also: Budde, Buddaus; * June 25, 1667 in Anklam, † November 19, 1729 in Gotha ) was a German philosopher and Evangelical Lutheran theologian.

Life

The son of the pastor of the St. Nicholas Church Buddeus Franz (1634-1705) and his wife Catherine, born Balthasar, († 1689) has already been taught in his earliest childhood by private tutors so acquired extensive experience in the Oriental languages ​​and theological contexts. In 1685 he entered the University of Wittenberg, where he lectures the philosophical faculty visited with teachers such as Christian Donati, Christian Röhrensee, Johann Baptist Röschel and Theodor Dassov. He also heard, even its inclination according to the theological remarks of Michael Walther and Johann Georg Neumann. In 1687, he became the defense " Praeses, de Symbolis eucharisticis " the degree of Master of Arts in 1689 and his habilitation with the defense " de allegoriis Origenis " as an adjunct to the philosophical faculty.

In the same year he moved to the University of Jena, where he - supported by Caspar Sagittarius II (1643-1694) - is the historical studies devoted. In 1692 he went as a high school professor of Greek and Latin language and moved to Coburg in 1693 as a professor of ethics at the newly established University of Halle. Subsequently, he was appointed in the same year as the second professor of theology at the University of Jena. He later became professor of the theological faculty, and was also three times rector of the Academy. Buddeus was considered moderate and universal theologian of his time. He stood between pietism and Lutheran orthodoxy and prepared as a theologian of the transitional period of the Enlightenment also the way. He had contacts with leading figures of pietism as August Gottlieb Spangenberg, Philipp Jakob Spener and Nikolaus Ludwig Graf von Zinzendorf.

Buddeus found his final resting place on the Gotha old graveyard between guarantor Rough and Eisenacherstraße. After the abandonment of the cemetery in 1874 his grave plate was placed in the cloister of the Augustinian church where they can be seen to this day.

Family

On February 27, 1693, he married Catherine Susanne Poßner born, the eldest daughter of the Jena physics professor Caspar Poßner. After this was passed in 1714 and he left three sons and one daughter, he went in 1716 a second marriage with Elenora Magdalena, born braid, daughter of Gera preacher Johann Caspar braid and sister of the theologian Johann Heinrich Zopf. From this marriage two sons were born, her father but that should not survive. His daughter Charlotta Catherine married the professor of theology in Jena, Johann Georg Walch. His son from his first marriage Buddeus Karl Franz (1695-1753) was a renowned lawyer and Vice-Chancellor of Gotha.
