Johann Georg Herbst

Johann Georg Herbst ( born January 13, 1787 in Rottweil, † July 31, 1836 in Tübingen) was a Catholic priest and professor of Oriental languages ​​and exegesis at the University of Tübingen. He was co-founder in 1819 of the traditional theological quarterly magazine.

Education and Career

After attending high school in Rottweil autumn 1805 appeared as a novice in the Benedictine Abbey of St. Peter in the Black Forest. He graduated in 1806 and 1807, philosophy, physics and mathematics in Freiburg im Breisgau and returned after cancellation of St. Peter in the spring of 1807 back to Rottweil. After he had passed the examination in philosophy and theology at the Lyceum, he returned again in 1810 to Freiburg, where he under the guidance of Leonhard Hug ( 1765-1846 ) dealt with the Oriental languages ​​and Biblical scholarship.

A place closed to the priesthood in 1811 as a parish administrator in Freiburg- Adelhausen which again gave him the study of languages ​​and exegesis in Freiburg. In October, he already moved to the newly established seminary in Ellwangen, where he also held philological lectures besides theological. In 1814 he moved to the Faculty of Catholic Theology Ellwangen, where he occupied the Chair of Prof. Celestine Spegele ( 1761-1831 ) and was appointed in the following year as a full professor. In 1817 he was solemnly Dr. theol. doctorate.

Work in Tübingen

In his last years he worked on a " historical- critical introduction to the writings of the Old Testament ", but could not finish it. His successor Benedict Welte she published with additions from 1840.
