Johann Georg Schürer

Johann Georg Schurer (* 1720 in Bohemia; † February 16, 1786 in Dresden) was a composer at the Dresden court, who composed especially church music as well as several operas.

Life

About Schürers training nothing is known, he is first mentioned in 1746. Between 1746 and 1748 resulted in an opera troupe on five operas by Schurer in Dresden. 1748 Schurer was court composer and received a salary of 300 thalers. His task was to lead the Catholic Church Music for the Dresden Court, first in a chapel at the pocket mountain (former Opera House on pocket mountain ), from 1751 in the newly established Hofkirche. In this context, Schurer received in 1754 a salary increase of 200 thalers. In 1765 he married the opera singer Wilhelmine Denner. Since 1772, he was supported by his disciples Joseph and Franz Schuster Seydelmann. At the end of his life Schurer was not in good health so that he in 1773 and 1775 two recreational trips undertaken. In 1780 he was forced to retire. He died in 1786 in Dresden.

Works

In addition to five operas, which were performed 1746-1748, Schurer wrote mainly Catholic church music. He sold in 1767, 1772 and 1782 manuscripts of his compositions to the court. To this end, he made one directory. This figure included the 40 fairs, three and three Requiem Te Deum as well as numerous compositions of individual liturgical chants included, such as the Regina Caeli, the Salve Regina and the Litany of Loreto, also over 150 Psalm compositions. Schürers work is preserved only in part. Its recognition among his contemporaries suffered because he never took a trip to Italy.
