Johann Sahulka

Johann Sahulka ( born December 25, 1857 in German -Wagram, † October 8, 1927 in Vienna ) was an Austrian electrical engineer.

Life

Sahulka was the son of a flagman and studied at the University of Vienna physics and mathematics. He put his teaching certificate in 1881 and his doctorate in 1882 and then taught from 1884 to 1888 at the Währinger Realschule and 1888/1889 on Theresianumgasse. His Habilitation at the Technical University of Vienna took place in 1892. He was there at the Electrotechnical Institute constructor. 1894-1898 Sahulka was employed in the Austrian general gauge. In 1899 he became technical advice in the Patent Office. At the Technical University from 1903 he was professor of electrical engineering. 1909/10 and 1910 /11 was Dean, 1913/14, rector. In 1915 he received the title of court councilor. Johann Sahulka suffered in 1921 due to a stroke severe restrictions in his sight and took effect in 1922 to retire.

He was awarded the Order of the Iron Crown. In 1932, we named the Sahulkastraße in Vienna-Favoriten after him.

Importance

Johann Sahulka made ​​numerous pioneering work on electric machines, as well as on the measures, news and lighting. He discovered in 1894, the rectifying effect of the mercury vapor arc, which is applied in the mercury vapor rectifiers.
