Johann Tobias Bürg

Johann Tobias guarantees (* December 24, 1766 in Vienna, † November 15, 1835 in Wiesenau in Bad St. Leonhard in the Lavant Valley, Carinthia ) was an astronomer and professor at the University of Vienna from 1792 to 1818.

Guarantees was an internationally recognized authority as an astronomer. He had acquired his knowledge and skills as an adjunct of the observatory at Gotha Franz Xaver von Zach.

From 1791 he was first professor of physics at the high school Klagenfurt, later adjunct at the Observatory of Vienna, which he finally 1817 ( after the death of Trie Necker ) could take over as director.

As the Paris Institut National in 1799 a prize for the most accurate calculation of the lunar orbit invited tenders, guarantees wore next to the Frenchman Alexis Bouvard the victory. Guarantees had analyzed data from about 3,000 lunar observations and developed a complex theory of motion. At the end of the competition guarantees could take receipt for his outstanding academic performance one kilograms of gold ( 260 ducats ).

Johann Tobias Bürg spent during his active time for many weeks at Castle Wiesenau in Bad St. Leonhard in Carinthia, where he was close to Wiesauer circle. After the end of his career, he withdrew all the way to lock Wiesenau, where the old man, who had now almost completely lost his hearing, a spacious garret inhabited and continue dedicated astronomical observations.
