Johannes Vodnianus Campanus

January Campanus Vodňanský (* December 27 1572 in Vodňany, † December 13, 1622 in Prague, also John Campanus Wodnianus and Jan z Vodňan, German Johann Campanus of Vodňany ) was a Bohemian writer, composer and rector of the Charles University in Prague.

Life

Campanus from Vodňany, Pisek district studied at Prague University in 1596 and obtained the degree of Master of Arts Faculty. He then worked for several years as a teacher in Teplitz and Hradec Králové, was head of the school of St. Henry in Prague and Kutna Hora. From 1603 he taught at the Charles University in Prague as the successor of Mathias Collinus Greek and Latin, with lectures on the history of Bohemia. He was often appointed Dean, Vice-Rector and twice Rector of the University. He pleaded for Utraquismus, but resigned after the defeat of the Bohemian Confederacy after the Battle of White Mountain near Prague and the restoration of the Habsburgs as Kings of Bohemia in 1622 to Catholicism, but had to resign on April 30, 1622 his academic honors. In December 1622 Campanus Vodňanský died. It probably originated in an impoverished noble family Campanus (Campanian ) in western Bohemia.

Works

Campanus wrote mostly in Latin or German, but also Czech and Greek. The performance of some of his works such as the play " Břetislavova and Jitka " ( Bretislaus and Judith ) were forbidden by the censor because they damaged themes of family and state politics treated and the reputation of the Bohemian dukes. His poems were characterized by formal perfection. As a composer Campanus Vodňanský set to music hymns and texts for the celebration of worship.
