John Bacon (sculptor)

John Bacon the Elder RA ( * November 24, 1740 in London, † August 4, 1799 ) was a British sculptor, china painters and a modeller.

John Bacon was at the age of 14 years, employees of a porcelain factory where he worked as a painter, but later discovered his talent for modeling. In 1770 he created his most well known work, a statue of Mars in marble, which he also received in the same year a member of the Royal Academy. The grave monument to William Pitt, 1st Earl of Chatham is on display in Westminster Abbey, other monuments in the Christ Church Cathedral in Oxford, such as two busts of King George III.

In 1769, he won the gold medal of the Royal Academy of Arts, in which he was elected on 11 February 1778.
