John Colenso

John William Colenso (* January 24, 1814 in St. Austell, Cornwall, † June 20, 1883 in Pietermaritzburg ), with leg Imitate Sobantu was the first Anglican bishop of Natal, mathematician, theologian and social activist.

Life

After studying at Cambridge, he wrote a later widely used math textbook. After a short time as a teacher at Harrow School he went in 1845 for eight years in the church service as a country parson in Norfolk in 1953, he was appointed bishop of the newly established Diocese of Natal appointed.

There he was missionary work among the Zulu. He created the first written language for Zulu. In a few years he wrote a dictionary and a grammar of the language and translated the New Testament into Zulu. He advocated the Zulu and against corruption and oppression of Africans.

Because of a commentary on Romans a second bishop in 1860 in its place inserted, but he remained still in his office. He should then be excommunicated in 1862, but this was withdrawn in court. Because of its liberal humanist stance on Africa 's white trailer in South Africa were always less.

His missionary efforts among the Zulu, who had no Christian ancestors, let him doubt the then widespread doctrine that all ancestors of Christians are irrevocably condemned to hell if they were not Christians in their lifetime. On this occasion, he wrote a series of theological treatises on the Pentateuch and the Book of Joshua, which attracted a great scandal in England.

Because of his efforts to Zulu during the Zulu War he was " Sobantu " called (father of the people). From another, he was honored as "the last honest white man ".
