John de la Pole, 2nd Duke of Suffolk

John de la Pole, 2nd Duke of Suffolk ( born September 27, 14421491/1492 ) was the son of William de la Pole and Alice Chaucer, daughter of Thomas Chaucer.

Even in his childhood, John fell into the rivalries between the House of York and Lancaster. His father, a counselor of Henry VI, tried to get his son into marrying a significant Lancaster family. On 7 February 1450 a few months before his father's death, was a Eheversprechung the Seven Years with Margaret Beaufort, which was under the tutelage of William de la Pole, completed. However, this promise was of Henry VI. dissolved.

After the death of his father, John suggested obviously on the other side and got married before February 1458 Elizabeth of York (* 1444 † 1504 ), the second surviving daughter of Richard Plantagenet and Cecily Neville. By this marriage de la Pole was the brother of two English kings, Edward IV and Richard III ..

( Was a title of his father disallowed ) On March 23, 1463, brother Edward IV appointed him again to the Duke: John's new relationship was very rewarding for him. More lucrative and honorable post followed: De la Pole was like his father, the commander of the castle in Wallingford, 1472 Knight of the Order of the Garter and High Steward of the University of Oxford.

After the defeat of York in 1485 seems to have John de la Pole taken the sensible decision to retire from politics, while his sons continued to fight in vain against the reality. So Henry VII left him his title - possibly under the influence of his mother - and he died as the Duke of Suffolk at the age of 50 years and was, like his father buried in Wingfield
