John Egerton, 7th Earl of Bridgewater

John William Egerton, 7th Earl of Bridgewater FRS (* April 14, 1753, † October 21, 1823 ), known as John Egerton until 1803, was a British soldier and Tory politician.

Egerton was the son of John Egerton, who was from 1771 to 1787 Bishop of Durham, and Anne Sophia Grey. His maternal grandparents were Henry Grey, 1st Duke of Kent, and his second wife Sophia Bentinck.

He joined the British Army in 1771 and had then following military career: then Captain (1776 ), Major (1779 ), Lieutenant Colonel (1790), Colonel (1793), Major-General (1795 ), Lieutenant General (1802 ) and 1812 promotion to General.

He was also a member of the British House of Commons as a Member of the community Morpeth from 1777 to 1780 and for the community Brackley from 1780 to 1803.

In 1803 he inherited the title Earl of Bridgewater by his unmarried and childless deceased distant cousin Francis Egerton, 3rd Duke of Bridgewater. The title of Duke of Bridgewater was not weiterverebt because Egerton was not related to the first Duke in a straight line, and therefore went out.

Egerton married in 1783 Charlotte Catherine Anne, daughter of Samuel Haynes. The marriage remained childless. Egerton died in October 1823 at the age of 70 years; the nobility went over to his younger brother Francis. Lady Bridgewater died in 1849 at the age of 85 years.
