John Entenza

John D. Entenza (* 1905 in Calumet, † April 27, 1984 in La Jolla ) was an American journalist and publisher. He was instrumental in the spread of modern architecture in the United States.

Life

1938 John Entenza went as a journalist for the magazine California Arts & Architecture, based in Los Angeles. By 1943 he had taken over the magazine and renamed in Arts & Architecture. With the magazine he put on the Case Study Houses program in which several representatives of the Modern architects were commissioned to design and construction of buildings. One of the buildings was also John Entenzas private house, Entenza House ( Case Study House No. 9) in Pacific Palisades. He chose Eero Saarinen and Charles Eames, the Eames House be built on the same grounds, as architects. By 1962, Entenza was at Arts & Architecture, then he sold the magazine. From 1960 to 1971 he was the director of the Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts in Chicago.
