John Hobhouse, Baron Hobhouse of Woodborough

John Stewart Hobhouse, Baron Hobhouse of Woodborough, PC ( born January 31, 1932 † 15 March 2004) was a British judge and Law Lord.

Life and career

He was born in Mossley Hill, Liverpool. He was educated in St. Andrews, Pangbourne and Eton. After working for some time on sheep farms in Australia and New Zealand, Hobhouse returned in 1951 to Christchurch, Oxford back. He became a barrister and was appointed in 1955 in the legal profession. Later he became a Bencher.

Hobhouse was appointed in 1982 to the High Court judge and was awarded a knighthood. He was appointed Lord Justice of Appeal and a member of the Privy Council in 1993.

On 1 October 1998 he was appointed Lord of Appeal in Ordinary and life peer with the title

Baron Hobhouse of Woodborough of Woodborough in the County of Wiltshire.

Lord Hobhouse was married to Susannah Roskill. They had two sons and a daughter.
