John Jacob Astor, 1st Baron Astor of Hever

John Jacob Astor, 1st Baron Astor of Hever (also: John Jacob Astor V, born May 20, 1886 in New York City; † July 19, 1971 in Cannes ) was the first winner of the title Baron Astor of Hever. He was the father of Gavin Astor and the grandfather of John Astor.

Astor won together with Vane Pennell a gold medal in the rackets in the men's doubles and a bronze medal in singles at the Olympic Summer Games 1908. From 1922 to 1945, elected in the district Dover from the House of Commons. From 1922 to 1959 he was proprietor of The Times. Between 1934 and 1960 he was director of Hambros Bank and 1942-1952 he was Director of Barclays Bank. Addition was 1942-1952 Vice - Chairman and 1952-1958 Chairman of the Phoenix Insurance.
