John Joseph Connolly

John Joseph Connolly PC OBE QC ( born October 31, 1906 in Ottawa, Ontario; † 25 July 1982) was a Canadian lawyer, university professor and politician of the Liberal Party of Canada, which was more than 28 years as a member of the Senate, and the temporary minister.

Life

After schooling Connolly graduated from the University of Ottawa and the University of Notre Dame, where he graduated with a Doctor of Philosophy ( Ph.D.) at the University of Notre Dame. Another study of law at the University of Montreal, he finished with a Doctor of Laws ( LL.D. ), and subsequently worked as a lawyer, barrister and as a professor. During the Second World War he was an administrative assistant to Angus Lewis Macdonald, the then Minister for naval defense. In this role, he was instrumental, involved in January 1944 on the dismissal of longtime head of the Royal Canadian Navy Marinestabdes, Vice Admiral Percy W. Nelles, was accused of failing in the management and training of naval officers.

On 12 June 1953 he was at the suggestion of Prime Minister Louis Saint -Laurent member of the Senate and represented in this until reaching the constitutional age limit of 75 years on 31 October 1981 the Senate District Ottawa West. During his Senate membership Connolly, the 1964 president of the Liberal Party from 1 January 1961 to 1 January, was a member of numerous committees and between May 16 and December 21, 1963 Chairman of the Standing Senate Committee on Internal Economy and Contingent Accounts.

On February 3, 1964, he was appointed by Prime Minister Lester Pearson as Minister without Portfolio in the 19th Canadian Cabinet and this belonged to the end of Pearson's term of office on 19 April 1968. At the same time he served between 3 February 1964 and 19 April in 1968 as Chairman of the Liberal Party and was thus leader of the government majority in the Senate ( Leader of the Government in the Senate ). Finally, he was on 10 to 24 April in 1968 Managing Secretary of State for Canada.

Most recently, he had in 1977 held between 12 October 1976 and 17 October, the Office of the Chairman of the Senate Special Committee on the clerestory of the Senate chamber.
