John Mayer (composer)

John Mayer (born 28 October 1930 in Calcutta; † 9 March 2004 at the United Kingdom ) was an Indo - British composer and violinist who is now placed internationally in connection especially with some early works of ethno-jazz.

Life and work

Mayer, who grew up as the son of an impoverished government officials in India, worked there as a street musician, having at the Calcutta School of Music received lessons with Phillipe Sandre and engaged early classical Indian and Western music, he moved at the suggestion of his teacher Melhi Metha 1952 to London; there he first played in the London Philharmonic Orchestra and studied composition at the Royal Academy of Music with Mátyás Seiber. With the London Philharmonic Orchestra, Yehudi Menuhin led to his Violin Sonata. " Mayer's music was a synthesis of Indian music and Western techniques of composition, of which his 1958 orchestral work composed Raga Jaijavanti testifies. " In the same year his Dance Suite by Charles Groves was performed with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra. Previously, he had already come out with Raga Music for Solo Clarinet. Until the mid- 1960s he was part of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. After he composed in 1964 for the producer Dennis Preston, Ahmet Ertegun suggested own albums Mayers to the field of jazz. To perform his compositions, he combined an Indian embossed quintet with the quintet of Joe Harriott. Between 1965 and 1967, as several albums created with this double quintet; more albums was recorded without Harriott. Then he was a member of the band Cosmic Eye with which he 1972 album Dream Sequence grossed. In 1967, his Shanta Quartet for Sitar and Strings recorded; James Galway was conducted in 1990 on his Flute Concerto Mandala ki Raga Sandeet after he had submitted in 1982, the album Galway Plays Mayer at RCA. Rohan de Saram also performed works by him.

In addition, Mayer, who taught at the conservatory in Birmingham, Keith Emerson orchestrated. In 1995, he reformed his Indo- jazz fusion.
