Keshav Sathe

Keshav Sathe ( born January 31, 1928 in Bombay; † 18 January 2012) was an Indian tabla player who has emerged in the field of world jazz.

Life and work

Sathe began in 1951 in his hometown of his career as professional musicians, and accompanied local musicians. In 1956 he moved to Britain, where he first worked for the Indian High Commission, before the guided by Ayana Deva Angadi group Asian Music Circle joined. Then he accompanied the sitar player Bhaskar Chandavarkar, with whom he performed in 1961 with Larry Adler. Then he played with the singer Surya Kumari. In 1965 he began working with John Mayer and Joe Harriott Double Quintet in Indo Jazz Fusion, which lasted until 1970 ( last without Harriott ). This Joachim Ernst Berendt was aware of him in 1967 invited him to the Donaueschingen Music Festival, where he under the motto Jazz Meets India with his trio ( with sofa Motihar on the sitar and Kasan Thakur at the tanpura ) on the trio of Irène Schweizer ( met with Mani Neumeier and Uli Trepte ) and the two wind Barney Wilen and Manfred Schoof.

In the 1970s and 1980s led Sathe continue his trio. In addition, he also accompanied Alla Rakha and Tanpuraspieler as Ravi Shankar and was one of Amancio D' Silva band projects. From 1970 to 1973 he also appeared with Julie Felix and Danny Thompson on, then with the band of John Renbourn ( with Jacqui McShee and Tony Roberts) to go in 1979 and 1981 on an international tour and the album Maid in Bedlam, Enchanted Garden and Live einzuspielen in America. He then founded with Tony Roberts and singer Shobhana Jeyasingh a group. He also played with Harry South, Michael Garrick, Tubby Hayes and Acker Bilk.

Since the mid- 1990s, he was due to arthritis no longer practice his profession. He died of a brain tumor.
