John Renbourn

John Renbourn ( born August 8, 1944 in Torquay, Devon ) is a British folk singer and guitarist who was best known as a member of the band Pentangle in the 1960s and '70s. Characteristic of his style of play is his round, delicate finger picking. In addition to Bert Jansch and Davey Graham he is regarded as an outstanding representative of the so-called "Folk - Baroque". Occasionally used Renbourn, sitar and electric guitar in his recordings.

Biography

Renbourn grew up in Torquay on the south of England and began as a teenager to learn guitar. In the '50s, his main interest was in skiffle and early next decade, he played briefly in a rhythm & blues band. In 1961 and '63 he toured with Mac MacLeod by the South West of England and then began regularly in " Les Cousins ​​", a famous pub in Soho to occur. There he met a number of well known folk musicians know, including Paul Simon, Davey Graham and Bert Jansch finally. Primarily, however, Graham's great success Angie, a landmark for many former folk guitarist instrumental, was the initial spark for Renbourn to switch to the more demanding fingerstyle genre.

In 1965, his debut album on the market that simply John Renbourn and was rather ordinary, little attention Folk - Blues offered. Together with Dorris Henderson he took on There You Go, and he also accompanied Jansch on his second album It Do not Bother Me published in 1966, the two together Bert and John, which is often offered improvised, excellent guitar work.

After two more solo albums Renbourn founded in 1967 together with Jansch, the folk-jazz band Pentangle, who released her debut the following year, which presented a hitherto unusual mix of folk, blues, jazz and classic moments snippets. Until 1973, the most highly acclaimed band still played a series of albums, which mainly took the '69 LP Basket of Light very well received, then they broke up.

Later Renbourn worked with Jacqui McShee and Keshav Sathe in the " John Renbourn Group" or the American guitarist Stefan Grossman together. His interest shifted over the years more and more on medieval or Celtic sounds. His unusual, intimate guitar playing leaves in as relaxed concerts often lasting impressions with the listeners. To date, Renbourn goes on tour tirelessly, often with his old Pentangle collaborator J. McShee or even the legendary folk bard Robin Williamson ( ex- Incredible String Band ). Besides he turns every now and then also his penchant for country blues, ragtime and jazz.
