John McAllion

John McAllion (* 1948 in Glasgow ) is a Scottish politician and former member of the Labour Party. McAllion attended St Augustine's Secondary School and then studied at the University of St Andrews and at Dundee College of Education, to be subsequently worked as a teacher. In 1984 he was elected to the Regional Council of Tayside, which he chaired from 1986.

House of Commons

In the late 1970s McAllion joined the Labour Party. At the general election in 1987, he ran for the first time in elections at the national level. He won before the SNP candidate Gordon Wilson the direct mandate of the constituency Dundee East and moved first into the lower house. In the following general election in 1992 and 1997, he defended his position.

Scottish Parliament

In the first Scottish Parliament elections in 1999 stood as a candidate in the constituency of Dundee East McAllion and the direct mandate won by a clear margin ahead of the SNP candidate Shona Robison. In the 2003 parliamentary elections he lost her and eventually retired from the Parliament from. Due to political differences McAllion left the Labour Party and joined the Scottish Socialist Party (SSP ) to. For this he was a candidate in the elections to the British House of Commons constituency of Dunfermline and West Fife.
