John McDowell (Pennsylvania)

John Ralph McDowell ( born November 6, 1902 in Pitcairn, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, † December 11, 1957 in Wilkinsburg, Pennsylvania ) was an American politician. Between 1939 and 1941, and again from 1947 to 1949, he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

John McDowell attended the public schools and high schools of his home. In 1923 he graduated from Randolph -Macon Military Academy in Front Royal ( Virginia). Between 1923 and 1929 he worked as a reporter for various newspapers in his home. From 1925 to 1928 he was a member of the City Council of Pitcairn. Since 1929 he edited the newspaper Wilkinsburg Gazette; In 1933 he became president of the company Wilkinsburg Gazette Publishing Co. Politically, he joined the Republican Party.

In the congressional elections of 1938, McDowell was in the 31 electoral district of Pennsylvania in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he succeeded the Democrat James L. Quinn on January 3, 1939. Since he has not been confirmed in 1940, he was initially able to do only one term in Congress until January 3, 1941. During this time, the last New Deal legislation of the Roosevelt administration there were adopted, where McDowell's party faced a rather negative.

1942 McDowell competed still unsuccessfully to return to the U.S. House of Representatives. In the 1946 elections, he was then elected to Congress again in the 29th district of his state, where he replaced Howard E. Campbell on 3 January 1947. In 1948, he missed the re-election. Therefore, he could exercise his mandate for one legislative period to January 3, 1949. In this time of the beginning of the Cold War fell. After his time in the U.S. House of Representatives John McDowell again worked in the newspaper industry. He died on December 11, 1957 in Wilkinsburg, where he was also buried.
