John Muir (South African naturalist)
John Muir ( born June 18, 1874 in Castle Douglas, Scotland, † August 3, 1947 in Riversdale, Cape Province ) was a Scottish physician and plant collector in southern Africa. Its official botanical author abbreviation is " John Muir ".
Life and work
John Muir studied from 1890 to 1892 Art and Medicine at the University of Saint Andrews.
In 1925 he discovered a succulent euphorbia, which was described four years later by Rudolf Marloth as Euphorbia susannae. The species name goes back to the name of Muir's wife Susanna.
Ehrentaxon
In honor of John Muir named Nicholas Edward Brown the monotypic genus Muiria. The only species of the genus, Muiria hortenseae, was named after the daughter of John Muir.
