John Murray (oceanographer)

Sir John Murray ( born March 3, 1841 in Cobourg, Ontario, Canada, † March 16, 1914 in Kirkliston, Edinburgh, Scotland) was an oceanographer and scientist.

Murray's parents came from Scotland. He went for his studies back to Scotland, first at Stirling High School and then to the University of Edinburgh, to attend shortly thereafter in an expedition to Spitsbergen.

From 1872 to 1876 Murray took part in the Challenger Expedition as assistant to Charles Wyville Thomson. By 1896, he published the scientific results in 50 volumes, arguing that oceanography.

He attended inter alia, Christmas Island, which later became a stamp dedicated to him. 1895, the Royal Medal of the Royal Society awarded him, in which he was elected in the following year in 1896 as a member ( "Fellow" ). In 1900 he was awarded the Clarke Medal by the Royal Society of New South Wales.

Murray died in a car accident.
