John Oliver (composer)

Edward John Clavering Oliver ( born September 21, 1959 in Vancouver ) is a Canadian composer.

Oliver studied under John Adams at the San Francisco Conservatory, Steven Chatman at the University of British Columbia and John Rea and Bruce Mather at McGill University composition. He was also the 1988/89 student of Philippe Boesman in Brussels.

1983 Oliver was one of the founding members of the Group of the Electronic Music Studio (GEMS ) in Montreal, which he was co-director until 1987. In 1988 he received the first prize and the Grand Prize of the Canada Council for the electroacoustic work El Reposo del Fuego at the CBC National Radio Competition. In the same year he received for this piece (which was later taken up by Sergio Barroso ) the price of Varese at the 11th International Luigi Rossolo Competition in Italy. The following year he was at PROCAN Competition for young composers in two categories amnésique for the orchestral work history and excellent chamber- musical composition Aller- Retour.

1990/91 he was composer in residence at the Canadian Opera Company. During this time, a first opera guacamayo 's Old Song and Dance was based on a libretto of his mother, the dramaturg Melissa Cameron, which was premiered in 1991 in Toronto and aired the same year in broadcasting. 1999 transferred the European Broadcasting Union Network as part of the series Myths and Music 's symphonies Raven Steals the Light of all 21 member stations.

Oliver composed chamber music and electro- acoustic works, operas, orchestral works and a series of solo pieces for guitar.
