John Ryan (rugby coach)

John Ryan ( born September 29, 1939 in Newport ) is a former Welsh rugby union player and coach. He played as a winger.

Ryan played for London Welsh and the Welsh 'school before moving to Newport RFC 1959. In 22 games for the club he put three attempts. In 1973 he took over as coach at Newport. In 1977 he won the Welsh Cup with the club. He could repeat this success in 1981 with Cardiff. Between 1988 and 1990 he was the Welsh national coach. Under him, but only two of the nine games were won by a 34:6 defeat to England he resigned.
