John Tuigg

John Tuigg ( born February 19, 1821 in Donoughmore, County Cork, Ireland, † December 7, 1889 in Altoona, Pennsylvania, USA) was Bishop of Pittsburgh.

Life

John Tuigg attended All Hallows College in Drumcondra. In December 1849, he went at the invitation of Bishop Michael O'Connor SJ in the United States. John Tuigg studied Catholic theology and philosophy at St. Michael 's Seminary in Pittsburgh. He received on May 14, 1850 Sacrament of Holy Orders. Tuigg was private secretary to the bishop of Pittsburgh. He was also pastor of St. Bridget.

On January 11, 1876, he was named by Pope Pius IX. Bishop of Pittsburgh. The archbishop of Philadelphia, James Frederick Bryan Wood, gave him on 19 March of the same year the episcopal ordination; Co-consecrators were the Bishop of Allegheny, Michael Domenec CM, and the Bishop of Erie, Tobias Mullen. On August 3, 1877 John Tuigg was also Apostolic Administrator of the Diocese of Allegheny.
