John Waine

John Waine KCVO ( born June 20, 1930) is a British Anglican theologian. He was from 1978 to 1986 Bishop of St Edmundsbury and Ipswich, and from 1986 to 1996 Bishop of Chelmsford in the Church of England.

Waine was born as the son of William Waine. He attended the Prescot Grammar School and the University of Manchester. His military service, he graduated from the Royal Air Force. To prepare for the priesthood, he studied theology at Ridley Hall College, Cambridge. His priestly career began from 1955 to 1958 as a vicar ( Curate ) on the St Mary's Church in West Derby, a suburb of Liverpool. From 1958 to 1960 he was vicar at All Saints Church in Sutton near St. Helens. Then he had pastorates (Vicar ) in Ditton in the county of Cheshire ( 1960-1964 ), at the Holy Trinity Church in Southport ( 1964-1969 ) and as " Rector " in Kirkby in the Diocese of Liverpool ( 1969-1975 ). In 1975 he was ordained a bishop. From 1975 to 1978 he was known as " Bishop of Stafford " suffragan bishop in the Diocese of Lichfield in the Church of England. In 1978 he was, succeeding Leslie Brown, Bishop of St Edmundsbury and Ipswich in the Church of England. This office he held until 1986. His successor as Bishop of St Edmundsbury and Ipswich was John Dennis. In 1986, he was, as the successor of John Trillo, Bishop of Chelmsford. His solemn enthronement took place on 31 May 1986 in Chelmsford Cathedral. He held until 1996 this office. In 1996 he went into retirement. His successor as Bishop of Chelmsford, John Perry. In 1989 he took over from John Bickersteth the honorary position of Clerk of the Closet. He was thus the first chaplain of the Queen Member of the Royal household. In 1996 he retired from office; his successor in this function was Jonathan Bailey.

Waine was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Essex. Waine was also to June 2007, Monsignor ( Prelate ) of the Order of Saint John.

Waine married in 1957 his wife Patricia Zena Halkney, the daughter of Captain Bertram Stevenson Haikney. The marriage produced three children.

Membership in the House of Lords

Waine belonged to the House of Lords in his capacity as Bishop of St Edmundsbury and Ipswich, and as Bishop of Chelmsford by the end of January 1985 until end of April 1996 until his retirement as Bishop of Chelmsford as a clergyman Lord.
