Jonas Lie

Jonas Laurits Idemil Lie ( born November 6 in 1833 on Hoen Gård in Øvre Eiker in Drammen, † July 5, 1908 in Stavern ) was a Norwegian novelist and playwright.

Life

Lie grew up from the age of four, the son of an official in Tromsø and studied from 1851 to 1858 law in Kristiania. There he met Henrik Ibsen and Bjørnson Bjørnstjerne. After successful studies Lie practiced 1859-1869 as a lawyer in Kongsvinger.

In 1866 he published his collection Digte that made him popular. Then he gave up his profession and worked as a journalist. 1870 published the novella The Fremsynte that made him financially independent. In 1871 he undertook a journey to the Arctic Circle region. There he wrote a collection of folk tales, Fortællinger og fra Norge Skildringer. The novel Tremasteren Fremtiden 1872 made ​​him internationally known. From 1871, he lived and traveled through Italy Lie to 1874, funded by the Norwegian government. During this trip appeared in 1873 his story Fanfulla. Lie was inducted into the Kungliga Vetenskaps -och Vitterhetssamhället i Göteborg 1890. 1904 King Oscar II drew him with the Grand Cross of the Order of St. Olav. By his own admission of Thomas Mann and Herman Bang Lie had a major influence on their work.
