Jonathan Dove

Jonathan Dove ( born 1959 in London ) is a British composer.

Life

Dove, son of an architect couple who studied composition with Robin Holloway at Cambridge. After graduating, he worked as an accompanist, coach, trainer and arranger. In Glyndebourne, where he had assisted in an opera project, he received a first composition commission. From 2001 to 2006 he was Artistic Director of the Spitalfields Festival.

Creation

Doves catalog of works includes more than 20 operas, choral works, instrumental and orchestral music as well as incidental music for the National Theatre in London, the Royal Shakespeare Company and the New York Shakespeare Festival.

The 1998 comedy composed Airport Flight premiered at the Glyndebourne Festival and brought Dove breakthrough. Two specially written for television operas reached an audience of millions: When She Died ... (2002) deals with the reactions to the death of Princess Diana ( born Diana Spencer ), in Man on the Moon (2006) is about Buzz Aldrin, the second man on the moon. Two works commissioned by Opera North in Leeds / Yorkshire have also reached the German opera audience: The Adventures of Pinocchio by the children's book by Carlo Collodi was premiered on Christmas 2007 in Leeds, the German premiere under the title The Adventures of Pinocchio was held in 2008 at the Chemnitz Opera House. Swanhunter, a fantasy short opera based on motives of the Finnish Kalevala epic, lived in the same houses in 2009 and 2011 premiered its German premiere.

A special commitment Doves applies the cultural work at the local level. With " Community - operas" like The Palace in the Sky ( 2000), he brings together people of different backgrounds and education to work together to create a musical project.

Dove was also commissioned compositions for public celebrations. To accompany his music celebrations for the millennium at the Millennium Dome in London and in June 2000 the opening of the Millennium Bridge (London), which crosses between St Paul's Cathedral and the Tate Gallery of Modern Art the River Thames.
